‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is the opening track on Nirvana’s groundbreaking 1991 album, Nevermind. It rapidly became an anthem and it has served to define the grunge music movement. In some ways ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ can be characterized as being so bad it’s good. Let me explain.

The inspiration for the song is rooted in punk rock and the desire for music to be a tool toward anarchism. Kurt Cobain is on record as stating that ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is a direct attempt at writing a song in the same style as The Pixies. Cobain was a huge fan of this American alternative rock band; especially the combination of dynamics contained within their songs.
